Birthdays! (And some history)

Bruce Kimm, Mark Fidrych’s personal catcher, turns 57 today.

Eddie Miller played 14 games for the 1982 Tigers and got one hit in 25 at bats; that’s an .040 average, folks. He turns 51 today.

Dizzy Trout was born on this date in 1915. The righty pitcher won 27 games for the Tigers in the 1944 season [...]

Happy Birthday, Nelson Simmons

Oh, how those September call-ups can distort reality.
In nine games with the Tigers junior varsity (i.e., after they clinched the division), Simmons batted .433 (13 for 30). Move over, Larry Herndon, right?
Nah.
The Tigers’ second pick in the 1981 draft, Simmons (#37) hit 10 homers for the ‘85 Tigers. On April 29, 1986 Detroit [...]

Birthdays Galore!

For the first time in my life I will write these words: I’m in Marquette today. As a result, I don’t have my cache of baseball cards with me, or a scanner for that matter. So, you’ll have to use your mind’s eye to envision the following birthday celebrants from Tigers history:

Today’s Birthdays

Champ Summers, 62

Artifacts from the Late ’80s: Edwin Nunez

Edwin Nunez turns 45 today.
Remember him?
He pitched in 69 games for the Tigers in 1988 and ‘89, earning a 6-5 record with seven saves.
Looking back on it, I would’ve guessed he’d pitched in a lot more games than that.

You Know Life’s Moving Too Fast…

…When, on May 14, we failed to acknowledge the 57th birthday of former Tigers infielder Stan Papi.
The Tigers purchased Papi’s contract from the Phillies on May 29, 1980 and he made an immediate splash in Detroit.
On Friday, May 30 against the Angels, Papi started at second base and batted ninth (behind the number-eight hitter, Kirk [...]

The Non Sequiturs: Triple-Digit Heat Edition

Like Nuke LaLoosh, summer is announcing its presence with authority.
Triple digits returned to the desert on Sunday — a mere 104. Today the temps approached 110.
Big whoop. If you can’t handle the heat, don’t dish out The Non Sequiturs.
Or something like that.

Charley Steiner spoke with national baseball writer Phil Rogers of the Chicago [...]

Happy Birthday, Sweetness

How in the world did Lou Whitaker turn 50 — forget about 51, which he is today? Lest we’ve forgotten, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane on his 19-year career with the Tigers:

2,390 games
.276 average
2,369 hits
244 home runs

If you’re keeping score at home, Whitaker averaged a hit a game over his career. (Actually [...]

A Tigers Birthday Roundup

It’s been quite a week for birthdays in the Tigers’ galaxy, starting with May 2. Let us review.
Remember these guys?

Jim Walewander, 46 — A fan favorite in 1987 and ‘88, Walewander captivated the media with tales of his aluminum-foil window treatments and affinity for the Dead Milkmen, described in Wikipedia as a “satirical punk [...]

The Tigers’ #45 turns 33 today.
Also celebrating today is Tigers short-timer Les Lancaster.
Yesterday was Milt Wilcox’s 58th (!) birthday.
