Bruce Kimm, Mark Fidrych’s personal catcher, turns 57 today.
Eddie Miller played 14 games for the 1982 Tigers and got one hit in 25 at bats; that’s an .040 average, folks. He turns 51 today.
Dizzy Trout was born on this date in 1915. The righty pitcher won 27 games for the Tigers in the 1944 season [...]

I’m leaving Cleveland in about six hours and getting cozy with U.S. 23 and I-75 for most of the day on the way back to Charlevoix. So, I wanted to clear out the mental notebook.
Did you see that Chris Shelton got designated for assignment by the Rangers? In almost two months in Arlington, Big Red [...]

Still in Cleveland, still at the SABR Convention.
Heading out to the Indians-Reds game tonight with fellow SABRtooths. It’s raining right now but because I already purchased my ticket, I’m going to this game come hell or high water. Come to think of it, one or both could occur.
Overheard (and paraphrased): “Isn’t there a disconnect [...]

This morning I spent some time talking with Paul Parker, manager of the Rockies’ Community Fields Program and the club’s historian.
Having lived in Denver for six wonderful years — and attending the Rockies’ first home game ever at Mile High Stadium, and later the inaugural game at Coors Field — I developed an affinity [...]

So, are we thinking good things about Gary Sheffield these days? Methinks yes.
In his first three games back, he’s hitting .462 (6 for 13) with two homers - including today’s ninth-inning game tying shot - and four huge RBI. And, his slugging percentage is a hefty .769.
I shall not jinx the future.

CLEVELAND — For the first time since game four of the 2006 ALCS, I attended a game at Comerica Park last night. One never tires of paying three-times the amount for a Hot ‘n Ready Little Caesars pizza.
Talk about a memorable game. Running on just three hours of sleep — mainly because of this — [...]

I’ve never won a big prize in my life but it didn’t stop me from entering the Call Your Shot promotion MLB.com is running leading up to the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.
If you haven’t checked it out, here’s the deal:
The grand prize winner will also get the chance to pick a spot to which [...]

The Tigers’ recent uptick in performance helped the Detroit fans breathe a bit easier about the 2008 season. So how does Gary Sheffield’s return make you feel?
I, for one, think Sheff’s layoff will only help him and the Tigers entire lineup.
Imagine if he gets rolling — starting tonight as the DH, hitting seventh. The [...]

1. Joel Zumaya returns to the Tigers in time for a return to his hometown. Results of our highly unscientific Fungo Pulse Check poll show that Daily Fungo readers overwhelmingly believe that Zumaya’s future with the Tigers is in the bullpen. Eighty percent, in fact. A few of the comments centered around Zumaya’s violent delivery [...]

I’m just saying: if Barry Zito is anywhere near as, ahem, ineffective early as Dontrelle Willis was last week against the Indians, the Tigers better beat him to a pulp. No more leaving the bases loaded in the first inning with only a single run on the board.
Carry on.
