Baseball Prospectus on Jackson

I’m still wrapping my head around this trade. So, to get some idea of what the Tigers are getting in Edwin Jackson I reached for my trusty copy of Baseball Prospectus 2008.
Here’s what it has to say about the newest Tiger:
It’s been more than four years since Jackson was one of the top pitching [...]

Joyce Goes Home, Tigers Fans Go “Huh?”

Meet your new number-three starter: Edwin Jackson. Or maybe he’s number two. Who knows? All we do know is that the Tigers made the most curious trade since…since…Dickie Noles-for-Dickie Noles?
While the Mets, Mariners and Indians were swingin’ a 12-player trade (with J.J. Putz as the centerpiece) the Tigers were not zeroing in on a closer, [...]

Matt Joyce for Edwin Jackson

I really want to give Dave Dombrowski the benefit of the doubt on this one. I really do. But I am not seeing it.
Matt Joyce is a lefthanded power bat, something the Tigers have needed for a while, who could take over at either of the corner OF spots once Sheffield was gone and either [...]

Sheffield, Texas Ranger?

Rumblings of the Texas Rangers showing interest in DH Gary Sheffield?
Frank Catalanotto is one player Texas might attempt to trade. He has a guaranteed $6 million left on his contract, including $4 million in 2009 and a $2-million buyout (or $5-million salary) the next year.
As someone I worked with once said: “Two words: what. ever.”
Exactly.

A Smoltz Return?

Lynn Henning reports from the Winter Meetings that John Smoltz is interested in rejoining the Tigers organization — three score 20 years after he was traded away.
Smoltz, 41, a free agent who has spent the past 21 years with Atlanta, is recovering from surgery that ended his 2008 season with the Braves. But the Tigers [...]

Tigers Get Their Catcher

Well, the Tigers once again barely set the suitcases down in the hotel room before getting down to business. Moving quickly to fill a hole, they acquired catcher Gerald Laird for pitching prospects Guillermo Moscoso and  Carlos Melo.
Laird is a quality catcher who can hit, and he’ll give Dusty Ryan time to grow into the [...]

Shortstop Shopping

If the Tigers are dead-set against using Ramon Santiago as their everyday SS in 2009 (and I really don’t understand why they are), what are their options? Well, with Edgar Renteria (thankfully) in San Fran helping Zito form the All-Bust All-Stars, and Khalil Greene going to St. Louis, the field has narrowed a bit.
The trade [...]

So Much for Cruz and Lyon?

With the Diamondbacks offering salary arbitration to three players — two of them (possibly) of interest to the Tigers: relievers Brandon Lyon and Juan Cruz — it would seem that Detroit will look elsewhere for bullpen help.
Cruz is a Type A free agent and would cost the Tigers (or any team that signs him) [...]

40-man Roster Almost Full

The Tigers added five prospects to the 40-man roster this morning: right-handers Alfredo Figaro, Guillermo Moscoso and Zach Simons; and outfielders Wilkin Ramirez and Casper Wells. That leaves two spots that must be filled by midnight tonight.
In a blog post today, the Free Press’s Jon Paul Morosi thought infielder Will Rhymes, currently playing in [...]

Jose Valverde Available. Would the Tigers Have Interest?

Personally, I think this guy is a nut job. At least that’s my take from his days as the Diamondbacks’ closer. Save a game, go crazy. Blow a save, leave without talking to the media.
Richard Justice says that Valverde, a free agent after 2009, is available.
The hope here is that should the Astros come calling, [...]
