Game 96: Six Straight Curveballs

The Score: Orioles 7 - Tigers 4
The Gist: Armando Galarraga gave up two, two-strike home runs and Bobby Seay refused to throw anything but a breaking ball to Luke Scott and the Tigers fell back to the .500 mark. The Tigers weren’t suffering from a lack of baserunners. In fact, they had bases loaded with [...]

Game 95: Tightrope Walking

ESPN highlights available here.

The Score: Tigers 6 - Orioles 5
The Gist: Gary Sheffield went yard (almost twice), as did Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge, and Kenny Rogers pitched just good enough to win the opening game of the four-gamer against the Orioles. Magglio Ordonez went 1 for 5 in his return from the DL. In [...]

Game 92: Pathetic

How’s this for uplifting?

In one-run games, such as today’s 6-5 loss, the Tigers are 12-14.
In games against A.L. Central opponents, the Tigers are 13-24.
Ugly right? Well, get a load of this:

When trailing after the eighth inning, the Tigers are 1-40.
In other words:

They can’t win the close ones.
They can’t beat division rivals.
They have no ninth-inning comebacks [...]

Game 91: Two Words: White. Flag.

I’m breaking from the usual game recap format tonight to reluctantly raise a white flag on the 2008 season.
In fact, indulge me while I use a line from my favorite movie, “Midnight Run“, in which Robert DeNiro tells Charles Grodin:
“You’re in this mess because you’re in this mess. I didn’t put you in this [...]

Game 90: 41,062 at Comerica Park Play the Role of Lazarus

ESPN highlights not available here.

The Score: Tigers 8 - Indians 6
The Gist:Of all the games I’ve been to at Comerica Park, admittedly not a lot, this one ranks near the top. The fans were asleep one moment and awoke only long enough to express anger for what appeared to be another shutout-after-blowout loss.
Poor Eddie [...]

Game 89: Cabrera’s Now a Hit Flexor

The Score: Tigers 9 - Indians 2
The Gist: Justin Verlander was virtually unhittable — two hits, seven strikeouts over seven innings — and Miguel Cabrera showed serious muscle in going 4-for-4 with two homers as the Tigers rolled over the cratering Indians, 9-2. Marcus Thames hit a home run to right field — right field [...]

Game 81: Fortune Dane

The Score: Tigers 4 - Rockies 3
The Gist: Dane Sardinha tripled for his first big-league hit and drove in two runs to power the Tigers to a sweep of the Rockies. Kenny Rogers allowed three runs in six innings and raised his record to one above the .500 mark. Marcus Thames went 3 for 4 [...]

Game 80: Breaking Even, Straining Latissimus Dorsi

The Score: Tigers 7 - Rockies 6
The Gist: Ryan Raburn hit his first career grand slam and Miguel Cabrera’s bottom-of-the-ninth laser to right center drove in the tying and winning runs to save Todd Jones’s neck. Saved, that is, from the choking hands of Justin Verlander or, quite possibly, Jim Leyland. Verlander allowed two runs [...]

Game 79: Eddie Money

ESPN highlights available here (eventually).

The Score: Tigers 7 - Rockies 1
The Gist: Eddie Bonine continues to impress in the most understated manner and Curtis Granderson — two triples, four hits and three runs scored on Friday — is darn-near hitting .300. Result? A more exciting brand of Tigers baseball. And how about Clete Thomas? [...]

Game 73: What a Bunch of Bullpen

The Score: Padres 6 - Tigers 2
The Gist: The Tigers bullpen — prime ingredient Fernando Rodney, a tablespoon of Fossum with a dash of Zumaya — wasted Eddie Bonine’s gem, extinguished the momentum from Placido Polanco’s clutch, game-tying homer in the eighth, and blew the Tigers chances to take the first game against a Padres [...]
