Yesterday marked the anniversary of a pair of quintessential Randy Smithian transactions: On Dec. 28, 1998, he signed Gregg Jefferies for two-years and traded Luis Gonzalez to the Diamondbacks for Karim Garcia.

Gonzalez hit 23 homers and batted .267 with an .816 OPS in his lone season with the Tigers.

Jeffries, a career .289 hitter, hit .231 in only 111 games across the 2000 and ’01 seasons — his last in the bigs.

As for Garcia, he hit just .236 in 104 games in a season and a half in Detroit. On June 12, 2000, the Tigers essentially gave him to the Orioles.
