When you look at the dozen no-hitters thrown against the Tigers since 1902, you see three Hall of Famers, one future Hall of Famer and you see, ahem, Matt Garza.
- Sept. 20, 1902: Jim Callahan at Comiskey Park; White Sox 3 – Tigers 0
- Sept. 6, 1905: Frank Smith at Bennett Park; White Sox 15 – Tigers 0
- Aug. 30, 1912: Earl Hamilton at Navin Field; Browns 5 – Tigers 1
- June 3, 1918: Hubert “Dutch” Leonard at Navin Field; Red Sox 5 – Tigers 0
- April 30, 1922: Charlie Robertson (Perfect Game) at Navin Field; White Sox 2 – Tigers 0
- June 30, 1948: Bob Lemon at Briggs Stadium; Indians 2 – Tigers 0
- July 1, 1951: Bob Feller at Cleveland Stadium; Indians 2 – Tigers 1
- Sept. 10, 1967: Joe Horlen at Comiskey Park; White Sox 6 – 0
- April 27, 1973: Steve Busby at Tiger Stadium; Royals 3 – Tigers 0
- July 15, 1973: Nolan Ryan at Tiger Stadium; Angels 6 – 0
- June 2, 1990: Randy Johnson at The Kingdome; Mariners 2 – Tigers 0
- July 26, 2010: Matt Garza, Tropicana Field; Rays 5 – Tigers 0
On Aug. 5, 1940, the Browns’ John Whitehead no-hit the Tigers over six innings at Sportsman’s Park. It was the second game of a doubleheader and most likely, the game was called due to darkness (though the box score doesn’t indicate this). The Browns won 4-0.
What’s interesting about this game is the OPS numbers put up by four Tigers players: Hank Greenberg (1.027), Rudy York (.999), Barney McCoskey (.931) and Pinky Higgins (.823).
Discuss.
