The Score: Yankees 8 – Tigers 0
The Gist: It’s real simple: Phil Hughes. The Tigers couldn’t cash-in on the one opportunity they had to get on the board and Hughes rolled. He struck out eight in seven innings. Meanwhile, Jeremy Bonderman was solid for seven innings himself — by far his best outing in more than two years. The Tigers played well until the top of the ninth when the bullpen cratered.
The Quote: “Hey, that guy was good.” — Jim Leyland on Hughes
The Stat: 50+ — The number of pitches Tigers pitchers threw in the dreadful ninth inning.
