The Score: Tigers 9 – Indians 8
The Gist: The Tigers overcame an abysmal start by ace Justin Verlander (5 IP, 6 ER) and wasted opportunities aplenty by the offense — we’re looking at you, Carlos Guillen — to defeat the Indians 9-8 on Sunday. Eddie Bonine pitched three serviceable innings and Phil Coke earned his first victory as a member of the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera went 3 for 3 with a trio of walks and Scott Sizemore went 3 for 5. Gerald Laird raised his average to .056 with his first hit of 2010.
The Quote: “Who knows when we will ever score six runs off Justin Verlander again, if ever?” — Indians manager Manny Acta.
The Stat: 7 – The number of men left on base by Guillen. The Tigers had 27 as a team on the day.
The Stat II: 0 – The number of swings by Johnny Damon in driving in the tying run.
Up Next: Max Scherzer (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Luke Hochevar (0-0, 0.00 ERA) — 1:05 p.m. ET | FSD/1270 & 97.1
