Saturday Smorgasbord

LAS VEGAS — While my saintly wife shops to her heart’s content this afternoon, I’m sitting in one noisy Starbucks at a Vegas outlet mall, getting caught up on all things Tigers (and Wings).
- This is one of those days when you just marvel at the Internet: sitting three time zones away, I’m listening to the Tigers and Indians on MLB.com. Awesome.
- While Ugueth Urbina whiles away the remaining years of his life in a Venezuelan clink, his son, Juan, appears to be making a name for himself as a lefty pitching prospect. He hasn’t yet signed with a team, despite reports that he’s close to signing with the Mets. Even if dad is in prison, you have to think he’s gotten some good pitching advice along the way.
- After having absolutely no opinion of Adam Everett prior to this season (other than his defense-first reputation), I’ve become a fan. Still, when he comes up with the bases loaded (as he did in the second inning today) or even with runners in scoring position, I can’t help but groan.
- Okay. I waited long enough. What is it with this Tigers offense? I’m tired of checking the scores lately only to see them at least five runs down early. Another two weeks of light hitting from Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen and I’m going to be in full-on panic mode about them. You?
I don’t care if it is only May 2. The Tigers cannot afford to dip below .500 this early in the season. Have a great weekend.
**Update: Forget what I said about Adam Everett.

I try not to panic but Im worried.Im cutting Maggs some slack because he cant blame him for starting slow with all he’s done for the Tiger’s,but Guillen is different.Guillen is hitting balls rather hard but right at people so maybe he can turn it around. But his injury scares me,we cant have him hold the team down for long.We need him healthy if the Tiger’s want a good season, but if he’s not going to get better than it’s time to plan for the future without him.Thank god Sheff is gone-but Miggy&Maggs need the DH spot and Larish needs to play 1st base more or LF.I hope the Tiger’s can find a sean casey like 1B,but I doubt that will happen.I was a Carlos Pena fan,and I thank Shelton for ruining everything.Pena would have gave us a gold glove and power, who cares about his low average-his bat would look nice behind Miggy instead of Carlos. The Tiger’s need to make a move either soon or after the season to get a 1B or free up the DH spot-sending Maggs out of Detroit.I love Maggs but if we could trade him for some young talent it’d be nice but he’d have to pick it up a bit for that to happen.Maggs isnt getting any younger, and I hope the tigers dont live in the past too much.I’d like Maggs to stick around for ’09, but things need to be changed after the season. We cant have players hold up the team by waiting for something to happen that might not happen. We all love these guys but the Tiger’s need to use their brains and not their heart like they’ve done in the past.Thats my rant for the day.

Maggs will be fine. He’s a good hitter with the perfect approach for Comerica. It’s not like he’s a catcher or middle infielder, where the aging process seems to hit them all at once.
Guillen on the other hand, is too prone to physical breakdown and they should start seeing him as a part-timer. Perhaps the ‘super-sub’ role they tried for Inge last year.
And yes, Everett is a solid player, but I still like Santiago better. I still think he can do more things.

I know Maggs will be fine, but if the tiger’s could trade him for a young talent, that’d be awesome for the future. I know he’ll hit eventually. Knowone would probably give us anything for Maggs, but if we could get somebody good- why not? Even if the Tiger’s go to the postseason, we are going to have to rebuild the team a little. I dont want to dismantle the team, but I can’t stand to watch Maggs in RF. There are too many DH’S. Guillen should be gone, and if a trade comes along that benefits the Tiger’s-why not? I’d love to see Maggs stay in Detroit,it’s just hard watching him play RF. I’m more worried about Guillen. I don’t care if he can hit, there’s no place for him defensively even if he was healthy.
