Im gonna have to disagree with you. I think it's ridiculous that a player's number is such a big deal, especially when it's retired. I think that no number on any club should ever be retired, I understand the Jackie Robinson thing-which should be the only exception. If you start retiring numbers there aren't going to be any numbers left to use eventually. There really aren't that many numbers-nobody really uses numbers higher than 40-50. Who would want to wear #87 just because all the low #'s are taken-like 1,3,6,13,etc.I also understand the respect issue-if a player is still alive then ask their permission or their family-Sheffield asked permission and Tramm said ok. I honestly think it's stupid that a player can't wear a # he wants because it's retired or something. I don't mean to offend anybody, but every # should be available and no #'s should ever be retired. When I played sports my # was 6, if I played for the Tiger's I would have been upset if someone told me I couldn't wear it-no disrespect to Kaline. If you look at it from a different p.o.v, you'll see why it's not a good idea. It's just my opinion-I wish more people agreed with me on this one because this one kind of bothers me.
