In Hindsight…

Remember back in Spring Training when the biggest concern about the Tigers was the bullpen? Most laughed it off. With the powerful offense and solid rotation, who needs a bullpen?

Ahem.

In the end, an inconsistent offense and a shaky rotation made a trustworthy bullpen a must. After 150 games, the Tigers have been a three-dimensional failure (4-D if you count the porous defense) and the skipper, in summing-up last night’s game, captured the entire season in one quote:

“It’s been the same story,” Leyland said. “We got a two-run lead in the ninth and we don’t hold. They got three runs before we got an out. That’s not good. I can’t make it any more simple than that. I’m sorry. I’m not mad at anybody or upset with anybody, but last night we come in and don’t hold it, tonight we don’t come in and don’t hold it. That’s as simple as it is.”

Yep.

Is it just me or is this start for Freddy Garcia a losing proposition for the Tigers?

If he pitches well he’ll be able to shop his wares around the league and command a fat payday next year.

If he pitches poorly the Tigers look like maroons for giving him a shot.
