Sheff Put On Waivers
By Mike McClary in Featured,Fungoes | 2 comments
ESPN’s Jayson Stark is reporting (at 4:45 p.m. ET today) that the Tigers have put grumpy Gary Sheffield on waivers.
Teams aren’t permitted to comment on the waiver process, so it’s possible the timing is coincidental. But there were indications that the Tigers floated Sheffield’s name in trade talks before the July 31 trading deadline. So it seems likely that Sheffield’s latest remarks have prompted them to see if interest in him may have picked up this month in the wake of a number of injuries to prominent players on several contenders.
Putting players on waivers happens all the time, but given that Detroit ownership wants Sheffield gone, and that he’s mouthed off at the wrong time to the wrong manager, there’s lots of fire amid the smoking Mt. Sheff.

I’ve read some places that Gary Sheffield was not the only one placed on waivers, but it will not say who the others are. Does anyone know who else it would be?

Chances are decent most of the team was placed on waivers. It’s common practice to try and place just about everyone on waivers. If they clear, then you can trade them; if there’s a claim, you simply pull them back (no harm, no foul).
As for Sheff: Didn’t we all state about a year and a half ago there was no way he’d finish his three years here? This was to be expected. His history says he does this and, lo and behold, he did it again. The bad guy in all of this is Dave Dombrowski for giving him the two-year extension. One year certainly looks much more palatable now; especially since the Tigers will likely need to ship a bucket load of cash with him whereever he goes to complete the trade. (See Adam Dunn to the D’Backs.)
