Game 72: Serve Some Coffee with Tigers’ Sweet Roll
By Mike McClary in Featured, Game Recaps | 0 comments

The Score: Tigers 7 - Giants 2
The Gist: Armando Galarraga turned in his usual stellar performance and the Tigers pounced on a wildly ineffective Barry Zito to win the game and series from the Giants. Detroit chased the fading Zito with five runs in the first two innings and — surprise! — tacked on a couple more throughout the game. Placido Polanco went 4 for 4 with a walk and scored three runs. He’s now leading the Tigers with a .316 average. As for Galarraga (7-2), what more can be said? How ’bout this: six innings, seven hits, five strikeouts, two walks and two unearned runs. In case you were wondering, Marcus Thames chose not to hit a homer on Wednesday.
The Quote: “We won. It’s not about me.” — Marcus Thames.
The Stat: 6. The number of weeks it’s been since the Tigers were just four games under .500; chances are you remember the game: May 4 at Minnesota. The Tigers were up 6-0 in the first and went on to lose 7-6. The loss dropped Detroit to 14-18.
Up Next: Tigers @ Padres, Friday Night
Eddie Bonine (1-0, 10.13) vs. Greg Maddux (3-5, 3.31)
