From the Tigers Game Notes:
Today’s contest with the Kansas City Royals marks the 108th Opening Day in Tigers history. The club enters action today with a 50-56-1 record in the previous 107 season openers.
The Tigers and Royals have matched up five times previously on Opening Day, including a 3-1 Tigers win in 2006 at Kansas City.
Three of the prior four Opening Day games had been played in Kansas City, with the two clubs splitting the four games. In 1977, the Tigers were defeated 7-4. Detroit picked up the win over the Royals in 1980 by the score of 5-1, before falling in the 1982 opener 4-2. The Tigers posted an 11-2 victory over the Royals at Comerica Park in 2005.
