Rolling a 300: How Does Todd Jones Stack Up?

By earning his 300th career save on Sunday (in typical fashion: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K), Tigers’ closer Todd Jones joins some select company on the all-time saves list. Here’s an abbreviated list with some of the most recognizable names (checkout the complete list): (* – active players)

1. Trevor Hoffman*: 482

2. Lee Smith: 478

3. Mariano Rivera*: 440

4. John Franco: 424

5. Dennis Eckersley: 390

6. Jeff Reardon: 367

7. Billy Wagner*: 358

8. Randy Myers: 347

9. Rollie Fingers: 341

10. John Wetteland: 330

11. Roberto Hernandez*: 326

12. Troy Percival*: 324

13. Jose Mesa*: 321

17. Rich Gossage: 310

18. Jeff Montgomery: 304

19. Doug Jones: 303

20. Bruce Sutter: 300

20. Todd Jones*: 300

It’s not often you’ll see Jones’s name anywhere near Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter‘s. And what notable closers sit below Jones on the all-time list? (Former Tigers in bold)

27. Dave Righetti: 252

28. Dan Quisenberry: 244

29. Sparky Lyle: 238

30. Ugueth Urbina: 237

37. Mike Henneman: 193

39. Mitch Williams: 192

43. Kent Tekulve: 184

65. Willie Hernandez: 147

85. John Hiller: 125 (tied with the Nationals’ Chad Cordero)

…and a personal fave: 181. Rawly Eastwick: 68

Todd Jones proves that if you hang around long enough, you can out-save Al Holland (78), Woodie Fryman (58) and maybe the Goose.

Funny, Nos. 12 an 13 were former tigers within the last two seasons, too.

Play any sport long enough, you’re bound to be on some list, right?

Give me John Hiller over the vast majority of the pitchers in the top 20 saves list. Just more proof that the save is a highly overrated stat.
