The Non-Sequiturs: Back-From-Vacation-and-Exhausted Edition (Abridged)

Back from a grueling couple of days on the road (which included a, ahem, conversation with a Colorado Highway Patrol officer*), I reveled in getting to watch the Tigers on TV again. Nearly two weeks without my lifeline — DirecTV — was about all I could handle.

So, despite a severe case of road weariness I possess enough energy to submit an abridged version of the The Non-Sequiturs:

  • A Love/Hate Relationship. I say this every time the Tigers and Yankees face off but it’s still true: I don’t hate the Yankees. Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Joe Torre, Jason Giambi and, yes, even A-Rod. These are good guys — juice or no juice in Giambi’s case. One of my favorite players was Bernie Williams. Speaking of which, talk about vanishing into retirement. Sure, there are more than a few annoying personalities on that team — Roger Clemens, Johnny Damon, Larry Bowa — but all in all, I don’t mind them. That said, let’s hope the Tigers keep pouring it on this weekend.
  • Old Home Week? Chris Gomez makes an appearance on Tuesday night in Cleveland. Tonight, former Tigers’ catcher John Flaherty calls tonight’s game (along with Michael Kaye and Al Leiter) on YES Network. What’s next, Tom Veryzer Night when the Tigers return home to face the Indians next week?
  • Birthday Wishes. If you, like I, missed Roman Colon‘s 28th birthday on Monday, never fear: You can make up for it by posting a Happy Birthday message tomorrow for Mike Maroth on his blog. He turns 30.
  • Lighten up, Francis. When I watch Mike Mussina pitch I anticipate a mushroom cloud appearing over his head.
  • And avoid the Moo Goo Gai Pan. If you frighten easily, don’t look at the Tigers’ schedule for the next, oh, six weeks. It’ll be worse for your tummy than bad Chinese food.
  • Good for Zach Miner tonight. He walked Jeter in the bottom of the seventh but escaped further damage by battling through it. In one and a third he fanned a quartet and walked a single man. Kyle Farnsworth was his infrequently effective self for the Yankees. There. I’ve mentioned all three players in that 2005 deal.

Finally, in the off-chance that anyone’s noticed, I’m behind on producing the latest episode of the podcast. It seems my travels haven’t allowed me the time to put a show together. This weekend, my friends, I shall come through.

*Got off with only a warning. Among the issues: driving too long in the left lane. Seriously.

Just for the record I don’t hate the people who play for the Yankees. I hate the pinstripes… and Steinbrenner… and Posada… and Joe Torre… that guy’s a racist… my friend Gary told me.
On an aside… I said from the get go Durbin shouldn’t be forced back and forth from the pen to the rotation… that’s just asking for trouble. The stellar performance of the bullpen last night was heartbreaking. You see these flashes of brilliance from these guys, and when they melt down it makes you that much more frustrated.
    Welcome back Mike.

Having driven with Mike from Detroit to Denver to see the Colorado Rockies’ franchise home opener back in 1993 I can attest he does two things while on the road: One, is honk his horn at any cow he sees (and there were plenty through stretches of Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska!) and two, drive in the left lane.

Bottom line, I’m not surprised by the verbal warning.
