Texiera on the move … to the BoSox?

Explain to me again why the Tigers aren’t in on the Mark Texiera trade talks with the Texas Rangers?
I know, I know: “Offense is the least of our worries Doug. Whadda we need another bat for?”
I’ll tell you why: For series like the one just completed in the Metrodome where this juggernaut offense managed but eight runs over three games against so-so pitching (especially if you believe blogging buddy Josh Wallen re: Johan Santana). Not good enough for you, how about the meager four runs produced against an average-of-late Gil Meche and Brian Bannister?
If the going rate is a top-notch pitching prospect (take your pick from Jair Jurgens, Jordan Tata, Virgil Vasquez, Zach Miner, Nate Robertson, etc.), a workable replacement at first base (Mike Hessman), and another odd prospect, then why not consider it. At some point this team will need to move either Gorkys Hernandez or Cameron Maybin, because both — like Curtis Granderson — play a pretty mean centerfield from what I hear.
And hey, if it seals the deal, Detroit will throw in former Ranger Craig Monroe just for the heckuvit.
And let’s not forget, long term, the prospects at first base are less-than-stellar at the moment. Hessman’s older than Texiera (29-27), Sean Casey‘s not in it for the long haul, and Chris Shelton is still struggling in Toledo.
One more reason to consider it is simply to not let the Red Sox, Yankees, or Angels get their hands on him. The last thing the Tigers need to see is their competition get substantially stronger at the deadline.
Bottom line, Texiera’s a Gold Glove, switch-hitting first baseman who can provide additional pop from the left side and that’s exactly what the Tigers need.
Pick up the phone Dombro and make the call to Arlington.
