When I found out about his day I was po'd, but when I heard The Oakland Press scribe and part-time WXYT mouthpiece Pat Caputo sticking up for him I began seething.

His argument is that he has a track record. Yeah, no kidding ... of leaving runners on base. I don't care about the homers against NY last year or the slam against the O's this year. The man had struck out six times over the past two games. If you've got usable parts on the bench (Placido Polanco anyone?) you use them!

Leyland said himself earlier this season the AL Central will be decided out of the division and in inter-league play. Guess what? This was a game you needed to win. With a chance to tie it in the ninth I want a contact hitter up - not an all-or-nothing flailer.

And in the post-game the skip says he's giving Monroe "at least Friday" off.

With four K's already today, why not an early vacation Jimmy?
