A comment worthy of its own post

Dan Schonberg, a loyal listener of the podcast and transplanted Detroiter, often weighs in with insightful comments on the podcast or posts here on the Fungo.

His comments on the Tigers’ draft choices (which he posted in a comment to the podcast blog), are excellent so I thought I’d given Dan his proper due and make it a standalone post here:

Working late, and listening to your show, so I figured I’d write and talk about the draft. In terms of Porcello, some important things you didn’t mention. As I understand it, according to the new CBA, team have until Aug. 15 to sign draft picks.

That means no extended hold outs and craziness like we had with Verlander and we had with Maybin. The new thing in the draft though is that if we don’t sign him (or any of our 1st 4 round players), we get an “equivalent” pick next year. In this case, apparently it means we’d get the 28th pick next year in the case of Porcello.

Looking over the list of our other draftees.

Word is that Casey Crosby is also a tough sign potential. What I heard on the Baseball America podcast is that if the resources we try to put to Porcello doesn’t pan out, we’d make a run at him.

Couple interesting last names in the list.
Rd. 25 Colin Kaline
Rd. 43 Richard Zumaya

Any word on whether these guys have any relation to other Tigers of note?

(Mike comments: Yep, Kaline is Al Kaline‘s grandson; Zumaya is Joel‘s brother. They also drafted Nate Robertson‘s brother.)

Rd. 21 Kyle Brute
How can you not like a base player named brute? Winner of my favorite name drafted by the Tigers this year.

In case you were wondering, last year’s winner, Kodiak Quick, did not sign with the Tigers.
Last year’s list.

Rd. 10 Dominic De la Osa
This would be just a fun name to say when cheering on the Tigers

Anyway, back to work.

Thanks, Dan, as always, for your thoughts. Keep them coming!
