Uh oh. Yankees interested in Todd Helton

Dang.

It appears my dreams of Todd Helton in the olde English D will soon be dashed by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. Here’s the snippet from ESPN.com’s Baseball Insider “Rumor Central” (subscription required):

Trade brewing?
May 24 – According to scouts, the Yankees have expressed interest in Rockies first baseman Todd Helton and closer Brian Fuentes, the Denver Post reports. No deal is imminent at the moment.

If the Rockies don’t rebound, many teams will be calling to see if they want to unload salaries.

On the ESPN site it lists the teams linked to the rumor. As of this writing not one team appears — even though the Yanks are noted in the blurb. For the record, I just scoured the DenverPost.com Rockies section and couldn’t find a story on this.

Josh called me on my Helton man-crush a while back. If this deal materializes, Helton and I are through.

Mike, it’ll be okay. There are plenty of other great first basemen out there. I believe there’s one out there for every team. You just have to keep looking. Don’t give up just because this didn’t work out.

You’re a great guy. The Tigers are a special team. It’ll happen for both of you.
