PFP!

You knew it had to happen sooner or later … didn’t ya?

Other things as I clear my throat after this matinee comeback turned loss.

I’m sure to be Mr. Wetblanket all year long, but is anyone else as tired of hearing about “last year” as much as I am. Seems like all four Tiger broadcasters refer to things that happened last year or the fact that somebody did something last year and they’re sure to duplicate it this year.

News Flash: I flipped my calendar nearly five months ago and I flipped the baseball calendar the day pitchers and catchers reported this spring.

Speaking of our media members, why is it that Gary Sheffield “is bound to start hitting because he always has” but Brandon Inge and Craig Monroe “will get it going because they did last year?”

I’ll buy the Sheffield argument because of his track record (.296 career average, nearly 500 HRs), but doesn’t the same argument need to hold for Inge and Monroe? Over his career Inge has hit over .270 once and had over 17 homers once. Monroe’s a .260/20-HR guy. Why does the media suddenly believe these two players are going to do something they’ve never been able to sustain during their careers?

Is it just me or does it look like Marcus Thames is not going to get enough at bats to duplicate last year’s productivity? Doesn’t the skipper have to find ways to get him in the lineup more frequently?

I guess that early-season flawless fielding was a bit of an aberration, huh?

Will Carlos Guillen really still be playing shortstop in Detroit at the end of this contract?

Totally unrelated to the Tigers but the Seattle Mariners now have five six games (forgot the one I was at in Boston) to make up due to inclement weather. This begs the question that I posed on Ian Casselberry‘s Bless You Boys blog: Why not schedule a doubleheader each holiday weekend (Memorial, Independence/Canada, Labor). That way you’ll have more off days to play with during the season to make up some canceled games if a team gets nailed like the M’s did.

Looking forward to seeing some more the ChiSox.
