The Non-Sequiturs, Weekend Edition

One of the many advantages of living in the West is the 4 p.m. start time for most Detroit Tigers games.

As I settle in to watch an Opening Day pitching rematch, here is the first edition of the Non-Sequiturs:

  • I will always remember fondly Matt Stairs‘ 10-day (ish) tour with the Tigers last year, particularly the game-162 homer. But, come on. Are you telling me Toronto has no better defensive option in left field?
  • If you haven’t heard, Gary Sheffield is off to an icy start in Detroit. Rob Neyer sees Sheff turning it on eventually.
We would, of course, expect Sheffield to come around soon whether he plays in the field or not. But are there players who simply don’t adapt well to the sedentary lifestyle of a designated hitter? And if so, is Sheffield one of those players?

Question for you: If you had to do a switcheroo in the outfield for the Tigers, would you make Magglio or Monroe the DH?

  • The close-up of Magglio after his second-inning bomb tonight showed him with a copious amount of dip. How can these guys — he, Bondo and Carlos Guillen for sure — still pack in the Skoal given all we (and one expected they) know about tobacco use?
  • How fun was it to watch Joel Zumaya mow down the Blue Jays last night? And what’s with that non-beard?
  • Mario Impemba just talked about Roy Halladay‘s career record. For as excellent as Halladay has been in his 10 seasons, including the 2003 A.L. Cy Young Award, he’s only got 98 wins. True, the Blue Jays haven’t been a premier club in that time, but it begs the question (for me anyway): Will any of the top-tier pitchers of this era ever make it to 300 wins?
  • Former-Tigers galore in this game: Stairs, Gregg Zaun, Jason Smith and John MacDonald.
  • How long will the Tigers keep Omar Infante and Marcus Thames on the roster to collect dust? Methinks a package deal is in the offing. Todd Helton, anyone? Okay. I’ll shut it.
  • Okay. It’s time for Sheffield to put an end to this game. Or not.
  • He may not hit worth a lick this year, but I’m enjoying Sean Casey‘s glove work so far this season.
  • Okay, I have to ask: are Jimmy John’s subs any good?
  • Oh, lord, Fernando Rodney in the 10th. (Deep, cleansing breaths.)

That’s it for tonight. Have a great weekend.

Josh Wallen’s Quick hits in response

    - My favorite part of the Matt Stairs Tour de Force that was his pit stop in Detroit was this: Last year my girlfriend REALLY got into watching the Tigers with me, her monster crush on Nate Robinson (and currently after feasting he eyes on Mike Rabelo) are besides the point. We always called the tandem of Stairs and Casey, Humpty and Dumpty respectively. Stairs for his Egg like physique, and Casey for the fact that even in the first inning if he sheds his cap, it looks as if he hasn’t showered in days. Though I digress…

    - How can Sheffield NOT turn it on at some point? For God’s sake we have the best record in the AL going into Friday evening’s game? Patience is a virtue. If I had to pick which survivor to vote off the outfield in response to Sheffield sans DH… MAGS. I don’t care how they try to spin the weather for the opening series… when you’ve got a guy who RELIES on a little slide move to make a play in right field, eventually you’re going to get burned. At least Monroe stays upright when he misplays balls.

    - Seeing as how I’m a smoker who is now on the path to quitting, (nicotine gum is horrible, by the way) I refuse to bag on a guy who wants/needs to have a fat dip in their mouth. I’m sure they’ve seen the warnings, and if anyone can afford to deal with cancer at some point in their lives, it’s these guys (from a financial stand point).

    - Zoom looked great last night, even if his beard didn’t get the call. Mike, you keep asking for love from the national media for the Kitty’s… Joel’s the guy they want/need.

    - I think the 300 win mark has become more of the Cal Ripken/Iron Man type mark. The way guys throw now, and the fact that guys go every 5th day makes 250 a big achievement. Funny how the 500 HR club starts to get overcrowded at the same time the 300 win club becomes more exclusive. Coincidence? I think not!

    - I missed the Non-Sequitors mid-week when my favorite former Tiger, Paul Bako, was doing a number on the pitching staff.

    - Thames is safe as long as he can spell Casey at first. Infante, unfortunately, with the amount of money we’re paying Neifi is going to be the odd man out at some point… just because there’s NO ONE who will take Perez off our hands. I want to cry. In regards to Helton… if anyone ever wants to have me admitted for my man love for Brandon Inge, you had better be right behind me with your Helton crush.

    - I enjoy the fact that Casey’s at first only from the selfish fact that he’ll cut down Inge’s errors by 5, by himself.

    - NO, Jimmy John’s subs aren’t that good. They’re cheap, if you like affordable food, but I’ll take a couple Travis burgers 99 times out of 100 over JJ’s and those stupid commercials.

    - Come on, the FROD (pronounce Fraud, depending on what day it is) looked great last night… NEVER MIND.

Good times, maybe someday I’ll get called up to the big leagues and get a spot on the blog! Till then I’m going to Toronto to watch Saturday’s game WOOHOO IT’S DURBIN TIME!

Jimmy John’s subs got me through two years at Iowa. I love ‘em. Big fan of the veggie sub.

Jimmy John’s subs are pretty good. If you want a sub and dont want to have to pick out all the toppings for it, the predesigned nature of jimmy john’s sandwiches is wonderful. May I suggest the Turkey Tom.

Jimmy John’s is taking over a building less than a block from me and expects to open in June. I’ll know then. Hopefully I won’t like it too much or we’ll have trouble.

Re: Jimmy John’s – Carol swears by the veggie and I the Club Lulu both on the 7-grain bread. I must agree with Josh on the Travis burgers, however, the health risk there might outweigh that of the Skoal or Copenhagen.

I too was in Toronto on Saturday, albeit just the first three innings (it was the end of a seven-day, 1900-mile roadtrip). Can the Tigs please move Durbin down?
